What does it mean if my liver tests are abnormal?

Mildly abnormal liver blood tests are common. Causes include fatty liver, alcohol, medicines and supplements, viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, iron overload and muscle injury. Further blood tests and an ultrasound usually find the cause.

Should I worry about abnormal liver tests?

Most mild abnormalities are not dangerous, but they should not be ignored, as early treatment can prevent long-term liver damage. Your doctor may refer you to a gastroenterologist or hepatologist if the tests remain abnormal or the cause is unclear.
