Why do I feel bloated every day?

Daily bloating is very common and is often linked to IBS, constipation, the fermentation of certain foods (FODMAPs), swallowing air or increased gut sensitivity. Bloating that worsens through the day and settles overnight is typical of functional bloating.

Common causes of daily bloating

When is bloating a warning sign?

See a doctor if bloating is new and persistent, especially in women over 50, or if it comes with weight loss, bleeding, vomiting, a change in bowel habit, a noticeable swelling that does not go down, or reduced appetite.

What helps bloating?

Treating any constipation, eating regular meals slowly, limiting fizzy drinks and chewing gum, trying a dietitian-guided low FODMAP diet, regular exercise and sometimes specific medicines or gut-directed hypnotherapy can all help.
