Why would a gastroenterologist check my low iron?
The gut is a common cause of iron deficiency, either from slow blood loss (such as ulcers, polyps or cancer) or poor absorption (such as coeliac disease). Men and post-menopausal women with iron deficiency are usually advised to have a gastroscopy and colonoscopy, and coeliac disease should be tested for in everyone with iron deficiency.

Guideline: GESA Iron Deficiency Clinical Update.
Can I just take iron tablets?
Iron replacement is important, but the cause should also be found. Taking iron without investigation can hide a problem that needs treatment. Iron infusions may be used if tablets are not tolerated or not absorbed.
